Is there a way to check the contents of the .torrent file (not the way to open it)?

On a Mac, you can check it with the transmission-show command in Transmission.

<Homebrew is required.

brew install transmission

$transmission-show amd64cd-5.1.2.iso.torrent

File: amd64cd-5.1.2.iso.torrent
