The margin applies between the view and the parent, and the padding applies between the view and the content. From the perspective of the view, the margin is the outer margin and the padding is the inner margin. Ding is internal to the view, so it is included in the size, but the margin is not. In addition, as can be inferred from the name, the two properties belong differently, and the padding is the property of the view itself, but the margin is the property of the layout.

You can intuitively see the difference between the two properties by making some examples. See the example below.

<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="match_parent"
    android:orientation="vertical" >

    <TextView
        android:layout_width="wrap_content"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:layout_margin="10dp"
        android:background="#c5e1b0"
        android:text="TextView margin only"
        android:textSize="20sp" />
