Cannot Format Hard Drive with Master Boot Record

Asked 2 years ago, Updated 2 years ago, 52 views

I bought a new 3TB HDD for external use the other day.
I sometimes use Windows, so I was planning to format it with exFAT in the master boot record (MBR) so that I could read and write from both sides, but it turned gray as shown and I couldn't choose for some reason.
It seems to be related to the capacity of 3TB, but I don't know what the cause is.
If anyone understands, I would appreciate it if you could tell me the cause and the solution.
Thank you for your help.

Note: The hard drive formatted with GPT exFAT was not recognized by Windows.
Note: Windows: Windows 7 Home Service Pack 1,64bit.

There is a limit to the number of MBRs that can handle sectors that are the recording units of the hard drive, up to 2 to the 32 power (4,294,967,296).Up to 2,199,023,255,552 bytes, or approximately 2.199TB, is the limit when a sector is 512 bytes, so GPT is the only way to format a hard drive with more capacity.

In recent years, there are hard drives with a sector size of 4KB, but if the OS recognizes a sector size of 512 bytes, the above limitations apply.

To use GPT in Windows, be aware of the compatibility of your operating system version. If it is a recent operating system such as 64bit on Windows 7 or 8.
