About Unpasswording the BIOS for Junk Laptops

Asked 2 years ago, Updated 2 years ago, 124 views

The BIOS of the laptop I bought as junk has a password and I cannot change the settings. Please let me know how to cancel the password or how I can change the settings without having to cancel the password.

The laptop information is as follows.
Manufacturer: CLEVO Model number: N130BU
BIOS:American Megatrends Inc. 1.05.05RHA

Ubuntu is ready to start without a password.

Additional
I wrote down the OS information because I thought there was a way to rewrite it from the OS side.

I am currently trying to pass through the rescue password that I found on an overseas website (it seems that it can be done with a motherboard made by asus). However, Alt+R does not respond and the rescue password box does not appear. It seems that updating bios will solve the problem, so I'm trying it.

"Wasn't it written that the used PC ""Translation Ali"" was cheap?"

On PCs over 10 years old, some BIOS settings, including passwords, are battery-backed.In other words, you can remove the backup battery and leave it for a few minutes to erase all settings (including passwords). It might be worth a try.

Of course, if the password is stored in nonvolatile memory that allows data to be maintained without power, the password will not be released when the backup battery is removed. The security requirements of today's PCs are becoming more stringent, so they should be here.

Even if the password is erased, there are many risks.

If the serial number on the motherboard disappears together, Windows digital license authentication disappears.Changing the CHS/LBA configuration on the hard disk can cause the logical and physical sectors to change their correspondence, resulting in loss of all data.If the clock goes wrong, the PKI certificate is invalid and all https communications fail.

So (I don't understand why there's a negative vote) @Wawai's "Password is for not changing settings" with one vote.

  • Request repair from manufacturer (there is a high possibility that they will refuse without warranty)
  • Try dismantling and removing batteries knowing the risk of breaking them
  • Give up and use it as it is

There are three choices:

As long as I'm asking on stackoverflow, I can't answer the question if it's "I want to create a program to cancel my password" because it could encourage crime.

If it is a specific model, there is a company that does BIOS password cancellation service (remove the EEPROM from the motherboard with solder, rewrite it, and return it), but of course it is charged. If you are interested, please search.Considering the cost and duration, it may not be faster to buy a cheap used PC...

For your information, I have a similar question on the related site (Super User).
How to delete BIOS password?-Super User

There is a utility called CmosPwd except that it overlaps with other answers already mentioned.
As for the command-line utility, a package for Ubuntu is also provided if the operating system is running.

Just search by keywords that come to mind and the explanatory articles in Japanese will be a hit, but there was a warning for laptops on the site below.

How to use "CmosPwd"

Notebooks may have BIOS passwords stored in EEPROMs rather than CMOS.
Clearing the CMOS does not release the BIOS password.

Passwords are multiplied to prevent configuration changes.

Let's have the manufacturer take care of the repairs

Ubuntu is irrelevant and the BIOS version is meaningless.

Please obtain the instruction manual from the manufacturer's name and model number. It may describe how to reset the password.
As a common description in the instruction manual,

  • Manufacturer's Repairs
  • Remove battery (774RR's answer)

lists the situations in which
