How to Stop Windows from Automatically Accessing External Hard Drives

I think Server Fault and Super User are the best questions for me, not Stackoverflow, but it doesn't support Japanese, so I'll ask you a question.

I connect an external hard drive to Windows 10 and use it as a file server by publishing folders on that hard drive.
However, the hard drive is noisy because it is accessed less frequently, so I try to turn off the hard drive to save power when it is not in use.
This power management is via Windows, not manual, and the hard drive will automatically power down after a short period of inactivity and power on when accessed.

However, the hard drive often starts spinning without access.
I thought it was due to the security software, so I looked at the security software scan log when the hard drive was accessed, but it didn't seem to be scanned.
Other software that automatically accesses files is not included.
If you look at the files accessed on the resource monitor immediately after the hard drive was accessed, it looks like a system file called $Mft or $LogFile, and the process was System.
Is there any way to prevent it from being accessed by the Windows OS itself?
I don't want to access the external hard drive unless the user accesses it.

There are several factors that can be accessed without permission, such as a self-scanning of security software and automatic indexing by Windows.I honestly feel that it's useless to just forget to shut down one thing, and it's easy to expect more and more items to change with future versions of Windows/security software.

You left the power supply on, right? If you don't mind the sound from the power supply or the power adapter, change it from the hard disk to the SSD.Even if the power is turned on or off without permission, it is almost silent. The cost is going down.

# When I brought my laptop into the anechoic room as a measuring instrument, I heard coil chirping from the DCDC converter on the SSD.

  • If you're just trying to control the operating system, one way to do the opposite is to refer to "How to Prevent Sleep" as shown on the page below.

How do I prevent my external hard drive from turning off and going to sleep? [Windows 10]

If it stops too aggressively, I have the impression that it will take some time to access it.

  • The question does not include information about the external hard drive being used, but most recent products have "power saving mode" on the external hard drive side, so consider switching to them.

  • Find out the cause of the sound and improve it.For example, if it is vibration, it may be improved by simply changing the installation location or putting vibration proof rubber on it.

If you are only going to do something with OS control, it is one way to do the opposite by referring to "How to Prevent Sleep" as shown on the page below.
